{"id":113,"date":"2015-10-25T03:47:19","date_gmt":"2015-10-25T03:47:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cluckeyo.com\/blog\/?p=113"},"modified":"2015-11-17T06:00:27","modified_gmt":"2015-11-17T06:00:27","slug":"my-incredible-aloe-vera-plant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cluckeyo.com\/blog\/index.php\/2015\/10\/25\/my-incredible-aloe-vera-plant\/","title":{"rendered":"My Incredible Aloe Vera Plant"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_136\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-136\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cluckeyo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/DSC02726.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-136\" src=\"https:\/\/cluckeyo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/DSC02726.jpg\" alt=\"Hercules\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cluckeyo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/DSC02726.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/cluckeyo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/DSC02726-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cluckeyo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/DSC02726-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-136\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hercules<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A couple of years ago, I stumbled across a great way to grow Aloe Vera.\u00a0 I bought a small start from the local garden center.\u00a0 It was only about 2\u201d around and maybe 6\u201d tall. \u00a0I brought it home, potted it, and that small start grew into an enormous plant.\u00a0 I just went out and measured it.\u00a0 At its widest point, it is 56\u201d across, and it is 3 feet tall.\u00a0 Some of the leaves are 3 \u00bd inches across at their base, and the largest leaves are 1 \u00bc inch thick.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t even know what I was doing but I just really hit it right on this one.<\/p>\n<p>One issue with Aloe Vera is the sheer weight of the plant.\u00a0 It\u2019s really not suitable for a plastic pot.\u00a0 Another thing about this plant, is that too much rain, or over-watering will cause it to get black spots all over the leaves.\u00a0 I did not want these 2 things to happen, and that was my basis for the decisions I made regarding how to go about potting it.<\/p>\n<p>First of all, I chose a heavy pot.\u00a0 I felt like neither the weight of the plant, nor the wind would be causing it to tip over, that way.\u00a0 Also, we had a bunch of compost ready, so I decided I would include that in my mix. \u00a0What follows is my method for potting this plant:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I chose an 8\u201d terra cotta pot.\u00a0 I cleaned it and placed a curved shard from a broken clay pot over the drain hole.<\/li>\n<li>I put a layer of about 3\u201d of pea gravel down in the bottom, hoping the good drainage would keep away the black spots if we had a lot of rain.<\/li>\n<li>I made a mix of 50% homemade compost and 50% sandy loam, I moistened the mixture a bit and added it to my pot.<\/li>\n<li>I hollowed out a place for my little start, and placed it down in my mix, still packed in the soil it was rooted in.<\/li>\n<li>I made a thin top-layer out of pea gravel, reasoning that it may act like a mulch and keep the plant cool.<\/li>\n<li>The best sun I could get for it was a west exposure that was protected until noon.\u00a0 So that\u2019s where I put it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This plant took off immediately.\u00a0 Very quickly, it was very beautiful!\u00a0 It did not matter how much rain we got, this plant could not be over-watered and has never had a black spot on it!\u00a0 After the first year, I had to put it into a 12\u201d pot.\u00a0 And I used the exact same method that time too, except I probably had a 5\u201d layer of pea gravel at the bottom.\u00a0 It\u2019s been moved to the sun room and enjoys a south exposure now.\u00a0 Since it is extremely heavy, I don\u2019t plan to take it out again.\u00a0 It has been magnificent, so beautiful, and perfectly balanced!!
